What are Proof Coins?

The U.S. Mint manufactures a special type of coins called proof coins. The coins are manufactured via a special stamping process. In most cases, these coins are minted in limited editions for the purpose of coin collection, souvenirs, special presentations, and commemorations. They are never manufactured for general circulation or in large quantities. Proof coins began their production since the 1850s and a majority of early proofs is struck as patterns or as presentation pieces for new designs prior to production of coins slated for regular circulation.

Oftentimes, proof coins feature mint marks or a letter that indicates where they were produced. For example, Denver (D), West Point (W), San Francisco (S), and Philadelphia (P). In addition, these coins contain a similar amount of precious metals that you would find in other coins of the same denomination. They are then sold for more than their face value to help mitigate their special manufacturing costs. Proof coins are sold only in sets of denominations of the year it is made. All in all, proof coins are famous among coin collectors due to their monetary value, artistic value, and historical significance.

How are Proof Coins Made?

Proof is a term that refers to the coin's method of manufacturing. Raw forms of proof coins are called a planchet. It is a blank made from precious metals. The blanks are usually polished with brushes to eliminate any presence of residue before being stamped with dies. After hand-feeding the blanks into the coin press, they are struck two or more times by the coin die. This allows the manufacturer to achieve a brilliant mirror-like finish in the background and frosted look on the raised images. Cameo is the name of the contrasting finish. After the minting process, proof coins will be placed inside protective plastic sleeves. The mint will follow up by issuing an official Certificate of Authenticity.
