[slug] => what-options-do-you-have-for-selling-your-engagement-ring [content] =>Making the decision to sell your engagement ring should be the hardest part – the rest should be easy. Don’t let your experience be ruined by a low appraisal, or interacting with someone who doesn’t know how to appreciate what the ring is really worth. If you have a ring to sell, here are several options for you to consider before choosing the best way to sell it.
Auction Houses
One of the most traditional ways to sell off an engagement ring. Auction houses typically have diamond and jewelry experts who would be able to give a proper evaluation of the value of your ring. However, you will have to get on the schedule for the next auction, and the auction house takes a cut off the selling price. Also, there is in fact no guarantee as to whether it will sell, as it all depends on the fickle taste of the market. If you’re willing to see how high a bid can go, this could be a fun option – but if you’re not willing to have to sell it to a lowballer, this may not be the right way for you.
Pawn Shops
Pawn shops take the risk out of the equation, as they will most likely buy your ring from you. There are always many pawn shops to go to, and they are a great option if you want some quick cash. The problem with pawn shops, however, is that they usually don’t hire experts – they might just put your ring on a scale and give you a low price for it. However, the melt price of a ring might not be enough for you, especially if it is a designer item, vintage, or may have a higher market value for any reason, you would not be satisfied with this option.
Specialist Jewelry Buyers
When you’ve got something valuable, you know you won’t part with it for less than the best value it can bring you. That’s when specialist jewelry buyers come in. While they are not as common place as pawn shops, nor bring potentially high speculative prices like auction houses, they are experts in their field, and highly trustworthy. You can send in your ring for a thorough evaluation, get a quote, and you will not have to part with the ring if you don’t feel comfortable with the price.

[slug] => the-rise-of-the-man-gagement-ring [content] =>On March 24, my best friend Melissa and her husband-to-be, Gavin, stood together at the altar, surrounded by one hundred loved ones. It was a traditional ceremony; the two Argentineans smiled blissfully in a sea of white and blue. Sunlight bounced off Melissa’s gorgeous 2 carat princess cut diamond ring on her left hand. But wait…; there was small detail that set Melissa and Gavin’s ceremony apart from others. When it came to exchanging wedding bands with one another, Gavin was already wearing a ring.
Hmm…
Well… if you keep up with celebrity news, you probably heard or noticed that Johnny Depp has a rock on his left finger! (Yes ladies, he’s officially taken…)
Or maybe you heard about Jennifer Hudson giving her man an engagement ring…
Yup! You read that correct, and now…introducing the “Man-gagement ring.”
You’d think that “mangagement rings” is a completely new idea… but it’s not. According to some sources, to exactly pinpoint the origin is difficult but it’s definitely predates the 21st century.
In 1926, jewelers tried to popularize the concept but companies like L. Bamburger & Co., (rebranded as Macy’s) joined together for a cooperative advertising campaign. The ads featured a black and white photo of a man’s left hand, a cigarette resting between the first two fingers and a large rock flashing on the fourth. The ring even had ultra-macho names: THE PILOT, THE STAG, and THE MASTER. But these campaigns were unable to overcome the ingrained femininity of the symbol and the movement flopped.
It’s the women who wears the ring to let the world know she was “engaged” to her man, and it’s the woman who took her man’s last name. Moreover, a groom’s wedding band wasn’t a given until the 1940’s and 1950’s. After World War II, there was an idea of “togetherness” and people were experiencing post war prosperity, and the lavish white wedding fit into that ideal. Therefore, jewelers promoted weddings as a symbol of the American Dream.
Some people think that the trend of management rings are probably re-introduced because of same sex marriage; and it has. The spreading legalization of same-sex marriage has created a new demand in the industry. In Chicago alone, about half a dozen jewelry stores cater specifically to same sex couple engagement and “man-gagement” rings.
It’s known as a tradition in our society that when a couple is ready to tie the knot, a showmanship of commitment is worn on the left finger. And therefore, instead of calling an engagement ring for men, it can technically have the term “man-gagement ring.”
Through the years, customs and traditions have changed. When asking for a hand in marriage, men were the ones who got down on one knee and gave his dream woman a ring to show the world that she is taken. But now, there are women who ask men out on dates, and the whole double standard gets pushed over a little.
In 1977, only 48% of the public favored a household where couples shared domestic responsibilities. By 2010, that number jumped to 62%; and because relationships and marriages are more equal than ever, nearly 80% of young women (under 30) support equal marriage with dual earners and share responsibilities. So… if two people can wear the pants in the relationships, they both sure can wear the ring!
Even jewelry stores have reported that women are starting to come into the stores looking for a ring for the man; one of the biggest jewelry store in New York City, Kwiat, has a various selection for “man-gagement” rings!
So exactly what does a “man-gagement ring” look like? It’s less expensive than a woman’s engagement rings but a bit fancier than a man’s wedding band.
In 2009, a British jeweler H. Samuel designed the Tioro ring which is a titanium ring about a half centimeter wide with embedded with tiny diamonds or two. So while women’s engagement rings are abundant, men have limited options- gold, platinum, and titanium bands between five and seven millimeters seem standard. The aesthetics are simpler, but the gesture itself is significant.
Right now, about 5% of men wear “man-gagement rings” now. “The guys who are doing it, are digging it,” says Calla Gold who is a jeweler in California. “It’s one more memory to add to the quiver of stories that make for a happy married life.”
So the rise of man-gagement is getting certainly some-what noticed. But what will it really take for the management rings to really enter the mainstream? Well… last year… the Robbin Brothers, a jewelry chain specializing in engagement sparklers, surveyed about 800 respondents about their attitude toward long standing marriage customs. The results: about 67% of the men polled are “open” to wearing an engagement ring. But because management rings aren’t a cultural staple, women are not prompt to buy them.
Basically, if the jewelry industry wants to sell more man-gagement rings, it may need to run ads coaxing women to pop the question.
Still, men are still seen as the main people who are supposed to propose. That will continue to hinder the acceptance of a new ritual good but until that acceptance comes, there is still a small and proud remaining number of growing minority.
Therefore ladies, if you’re bold enough to pop the question to your man & you man is open to the idea of wearing a “man-gagement” ring to show off the world he’s taken and committed, then why not!

[slug] => how-to-purchase-a-diamond-engagement-ring-for-first-timers [content] =>So you found the love of your life, and now you’re ready to pop the question; Congratulations! Now the hardest part of all that is finding the right ring and figuring out how to make her utterly speechless with a picture perfect moment. We understand… it can be very stressful.
But that’s okay! Breathe and relax… Keep these 5 things in mind, and you’ll find the perfect ring for her to cherish for the rest her life!
1. Know how much you want to spend.Walking into a jewelry store, you will be confronted with a dizzy array of choices when it comes to engagement rings. To avoid that, have a price range in mind! Then your eyes and mind can focus on the rings that fit your budget!
2. Get to know what kind of jewelry she wears.
Is she more classic or modern? Feminine or sophisticated? Does she wear more silver or gold? Do her pieces tend to be more delicate or chunky? Simple or ornate? If you buy something similar to what she already likes, you can’t go wrong!
3. Know her ring size!
Picture this: You get down on your one knee… open the box, you have her speechless and she says “YES!!!” and you go take the ring out of the box and slip it into her finger &… it doesn’t fit…
As a woman, I rather have the ring be a little bigger on the finger than to have it get stuck midway! Therefore, here’s a tip!• If she wears a ring, borrow one she already owns and trace the inner circle on a piece of paper.
• You can also slide it down to one of your own fingers and draw a line where it stops.
A jeweler can use these measurements to identify her approximate ring size.
IF she doesn’t wear a ring, estimate in the following order:
The average ring size in the US is a 6 (based on the “average” US females being 5’4 tall and weighing 140 lbs.) If she’s more slender, or fine boned, her ring size is probably in the 4 ½ or 5 ½ range. If she is heavier, larger boned or taller, her ring size is probably in the 6 ½ to 7 ½ range. Like I mentioned, it’s always better to a buy a ring a bit bigger than you think she’ll need, because sizing a ring down is much easier than increasing its size.
4. Know what diamond shapes suits her.Maybe your lady has already made it a little easier for you and voiced her opinion on the subject or admired someone else’s engagement ring. Here are some things to keep in mind when considering the shape:
• She will be wearing this ring 24/7 every day for the rest of her life. It will need to go with everything from her causal clothes to her evening gowns! If you’re unsure about her shape preference, its best to stick to the classics.
• Shapes with fewer facets, such as emeralds and princess cut (Square) require higher clarity. The fewer the facets, the more visible any inclusions will be!• Shapes like round, oval and marquise all work well together with other gems. Pears and heart shapes are more challenging.
• Tastes in shapes often reflect in other taste that your lady has. Think of her furniture. If she prefers clean modern line furniture, she’ll react well with emerald or square shapes. If her furniture tends to be traditional, round shape is probably the best choice! If she prefers a fancier taste to furniture, she would probably like the more unusual shapes like trilliant or marquise!
5. What setting makes sense?
There’s an unending variety of patterns and details and metal choices; but there are these four type you are most likely to encounter:
• Solitaire: A single stone. Still the most popular choice in engagement rings. The head secures the diamond and prongs allow the diamond to catch the most light. Four prongs-settings shows more diamond, but six prongs setting is often more secure.
• Sidestone: Diamonds or other gemstones, flank the main stone for additional sparkle and color. Popular sidestone settings include “channel” which protects stones by keeping them flush and “bar-channel” which allows more light to enter the sidestones.
• Three Stone: one diamond for the past, one for the present and one for the future. Usually the center diamond is larger than the two side stones.
• Pave (Pah-vey): The main stone is surrounded by diamonds to add sparkle and the illusion of greater size.
Everything making sense? To make all this easier, the main point is this. Consider her lifestyle and how well a certain setting will fit into it. If she loves outdoors and she’s active, look for lower profile, less ornate, and sturdy choices. This will make it less likely to get knocked or get caught onto things. If she’s more of a glamour girl, look for a statement ring, with a higher profile and more ring detail or unique motif! You know your woman the best. Whatever you choose to surprise her with, I’m sure she’ll fall in love! Good luck!

Prior to Diamond Engagement rings common appearance on women in the U.S culture in the 1930s, women were given colored stone gems such as Opals, Rubies, Sapphires and Turquoise. De-Beers created a marketing campaign that targeted women by convincing them that they are entitled to a diamond engagement ring from their fiancé. As you can imagine, this campaign has also burned a hole in men's pockets for having to prove their love and devotion with something more special than just a colored gem.

For those who have found their One & Only, you're most likely on the quest to finding the perfect ring. There are many different styles of rings. You have the traditional Solitaire ring (just the center stone), Eternity set (diamonds around the shank? and the Halo setting (diamonds around the center stone). One is not better than the other; it's a matter of preference. As for the trend of 2013, women are looking for Halo setting; it causes an illusion for the center stone to seem bigger.
After you have chosen the setting, it's time to get down to the center stone, The Diamond. Purchasing a ring is a big decision. In most cases, it only happens once in a lifetime. You want to guarantee your wife's satisfaction for the next few years, so be sure to put effort into the process. Take the time to shop around and look at different diamond shapes such as Round, Princess, Radiant or maybe Cushion cut.
If you're on a budget, stay away from designer brands. All diamonds come from the same earth, so why pay a premium just for the name.
Besides that, it's a tradition to get your wife a bigger and better diamond for the 10th year anniversary. If your love and commitment for one another reached 10 years together, then she's worth every carat.

You might have already tried selling your ring and didn't complete a transaction since your appraisal form was 4 times higher than your offer. Most customers feel the appraisal price determines the value. This is untrue. Appraisal is for insurance purposes and to give an estimate grading of the 4C’s for your diamond. For an accurate grading, a diamond is sent to a formidable grading lab such as GIA, EGL, IGI and receive a certification of the diamonds. You will normally find your item to be appraised more than the retail value, reason being when lost/stolen most insurance companies will haggle and pay you less. There is always a huge retail mark-up for engagement rings which is another indication why your offers are thousands lower than your receipt and/or appraisal.
Diamonds come in many different shapes: Princess (square), Round, Emerald (rectangle), Cushion, Heart, Marquise, Asscher, and Oval are just to name a few. There’s no shape that is better than the other. Its in the appearance that appeals most to you. If you have obtained a Round shape diamond from your break-up, you will find out how fortunate you are for keeping that ring rather than returning it or, gentleman, letting her keep it. Round shape diamonds hold a stronger resale value. Round stones are cut to have 51 facets. When light is immersed to a Round shape diamond it bounces off the cones in the facets and allows the utmost scintillation to be dispersed. Therefor you can obtain more when you resell a round diamond than any other shapes. There are so many gold and silver items that you can sell, but which are the top few that you will receive the most for? We came up with a list of pieces that are being sold the most at Global Gold and Silver and what you can receive the most for:

1. Engagement Rings
These can be worth a large amount of money, but the biggest beneficiaries are those that purchased the ring a long time ago.
2. Gold Jewelry
This category includes chains, bangles, school rings, brooches, and other weighty gold items.
3. Gold and Silver Bullion
Gold and Silver Bullion will pay back its fair market value.
4. Top Brands
We think of top brands as names that don’t go out of style or aren’t forgotten (i.e. Tiffany and Rolex). These brands keep their value over time, because the remarket ability of the item tends to increase its value above what it is worth if the item was melted.
5. Jewelry
Here, we include rings, pendants, earrings, and any other jewelry that can be priced in quantity.
Each of these items depends on the age of the item and the price of gold when the item was purchased. Each category is unique. Take a look at the gold or silver items you have lying around the house, and decide which category your gold and silver items would fit into.
At Global Gold and Silver we take time to assess each piece in front of you and with 20 years of experience, we ensure you get the best price for your gold and silver jewelry.
