Looking back on 2012, there were a couple of notable purchases that caught our attention.  As 2013 has only just begun, these purchases were still fresh in our minds:

The Hottest Jewelry and Coin Purchases from 2012The Prince Charles and Lady Diana Wedding Coin

This coin is 10 ounces of pure 24 karat gold that commemorates the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. On July 29, 1981, Lady Diana Spencer became Diana, Princess of Wales. The beloved Princess and her marriage to the Prince are commemorated on this spectacular gold coin.

The year of the wedding is printed on the front of the coin, along with the royal crest and the words “Marriage of HRH Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer”.  Having this piece of history is remarkable, and is sure to be a treasured part of a collection for generations to come.

The Hottest Jewelry and Coin Purchases from 2012Kashmir Sapphire Ring

Sapphires from Kashmir are known to be among the best. With a spectacular cornflower blue color and a sleepy quality, these gems are some of the rarest in the world. The stones are known for the velvety blue color they exhibit naturally.

Discovery of new sapphires that matched the quality of the earliest and most astounding discoveries slowed greatly in 1887, so most of the sapphires that were to be found are already owned across the world. With the exception of private sellers and estate sales, buying a Kashmir sapphire is almost impossible.

Global Gold and Silver is proud to have acquired these fine pieces, making them the hottest purchases of 2012.  We look forward to what 2013 has in store for Global Gold and Silver!

Five Tips to redesigning JewelryIt can be hard to sell old jewelry, especially if it doesn’t fit into today’s fashion or even your own style.  So why not redesign it?  Redesigning a piece of old jewelry can make a big difference in the amount you receive for the piece.  Here are a few tips to keep in mind when redesigning:

1.      Keep an open mind.

You may have bracelets or rings that you don’t like to wear or were family heirlooms.  The stones or charms on the jewelry could be used to make a necklace or earrings.  Let your imagination run wild! You can give your jewelry a new life to someone who will appreciate it.

2.      Do your research.

It’s good to research the style and fashion of today, as well as what your jewelry could be worth as is.  If you feel your jewelry might receive more attention after a redesign, then figure out what piece of jewelry your stones could be more eye-catching as.  Find out today’s value of what you plan on redesigning it as, you might be surprised if your jewelry is worth more as is.

3.      Look for inspiration.

There are many places that you can find inspiration to create new and unique pieces.  Play around with the jewelry.  For rings try it on different bands, or try a bracelet as a necklace.  You can often find inspiration looking through magazines or even going on a walk.

4.      Get an opinion.

It always helps when you can get a second opinion on your new creation.  Ask someone you trust to give an honest opinion and what you should change or not change.

5.      Try it on.

There might be an easy explanation as to why a piece does or does not work in your style.  Try wearing it after you’ve redesigned it and see how it feels.  This is a true test to see if the piece works or what you need to fix.  Even replacing a clasp can make a difference.

Using different beads or adding more stones to a piece can be enough to change your opinion of it.  Make sure you look into the new value of your redesigned piece.  Simple redesign changes can change the life of the jewelry.

Gifting Jewelry This SeasonGift giving and be hard…and expensive.  So, why not gift jewelry that you are planning on selling?  There are certain pieces of jewelry that might mean more to someone as a gift rather than selling it for a price lower than you expected.  Silver chain-link Tiffany bracelets usually sell for a lower price than other Tiffany jewelry, because it is silver.  By simply re-polishing the bracelet and gifting it to a friend that would appreciate it, you can give the bracelet a new life!

Redesigning old jewelry can also be an easy way to get a better value for your jewelry.  By dipping a yellow-gold ring in white-gold, you can make the ring blend in with today’s fashion (making it a more versatile piece).  A redesigned piece can also make a great gift for a friend or loved one.

Despite the changes that you can do to make a piece of jewelry more desirable, there are a few things to consider before you rush to regift old jewelry:

1.  The gift should be a good match.

Do not regift just to regift. If you think the receiver won’t like the gift, then the receiver probably won’t either.  Make sure that before you regift, that the receiver will appreciate and use it.  If not, then don’t bother to regift it.

2.  Make sure the gift is in good condition.

You wouldn’t want to receive a damaged or broken gift, so don’t regift jewelry that is.  Redesign it or pair it with another piece of matching jewelry or accessory.

3.  Do not regift to the same social circle.

You do not want to make it obvious that you’re regifting, especially if you’ve forgotten who gave it to you.  You don’t want to accidentally give it back to its original owner, so regift to a different social group.

4.  Remove the evidence.

Be sure that when you do regift a piece of jewelry that you don’t wrap it in the same bag that was given to you as a gift.  Take off old tags and put it in a new bag.

If you are hesitant to regift, then you might feel guilty about it when you do.  Take the time to turn your old jewelry into something new if you plan to regift it, and research the value of the jewelry you are still willing to sell.

It is strange to think about how gold can be used.  From creating edible treasures to making household items more valuable than they could be, gold can be molded into interesting pieces.  What do you think is the strangest gold item?  Here is what we think:

1.      iPhone 3GS Supreme Rose by Stuart Hughes

It’s painted in gold and is adorning rare diamonds, with a price tag of $3.15 million. This is beautiful, but Apple updates their phones every year or so and this one is already outdated.

2.      GoVacuum’s GV62711 vacuum cleaner

Every component of this vacuum except for the motor, wheels, and bag, are encased in 24k gold.  Referred to as “the world’s most expensive vacuum”, it has a 10 amp motor, anti-marring wheels, and an outer bag for disposable HEPA bags.  You would think it would be overweight, but it only weighs 16 pounds and is considered to be light.  If you’re interested in buying one, GoVacuum is only producing 100 of these gold-plated vacuums.

3.      Mercedes Benz C63 AMG

This 24k gold-plated Mercedes Benz has a price of $500,000.  It would fit in nowhere except Dubai, where its owner takes residence.  It has a top speed of 155 mph but with 600 extra pounds of gold, its performance is cut.  How would this look in your driveway?

4.   Aurumania Gold Bike Crystal Edition

Aurumania specializes in producing products plated in 24k gold in this case, track or fixed gear bikes.  This edition has over 600 crystallized Swarvoski elements, a Brooks brown leather seat and matching brown leather grips on the drop bar.  It is also hand built and delivered.  This piece might look better on a wall with a price of $114,464, making it the world’s most expensive bicycle.

5.       GnG “Golden Delicous” iPhone case

This case is made out of 140 grams of 18k gold filled with about 200 diamonds and a logo that is alone encrusted with 400 diamonds.  With a price of $101,744, it can be considered a steal to some.

6.      Luxury Edition and Gallery Gold-Plated Sink with Diamonds

Are you looking into remodeling your bathroom? Why not include Luxury Edition and Gallery’s 24k gold-plated sink with diamond accents? This sink has an aluminum casting and carries a bill of $80,000 and is sure to make a dent in anyone’s budget.

7.      Gillian McKeith Gold-Plated Juicer

Sometimes luxury items are ridiculous and you cannot find words to   describe it.  Gillian McKeith’s gold-plated juicer is a great example.  This juicer from EasyHealth has twin gears to make it easier to juice and removes 95% of pesticide elements from fruits and veggies.  It sells for $3,000 and can make anyone’s kitchen luxurious.

These gold pieces show how creative and sometimes impractical we can be.  Tell us what you found to be the most out-there or interesting gold items!

We all know that gold is valuable, and that the economy can affect the price.  But how much can gold really be worth? Here are the top 10 most valuable gold items in the world (from most to least expensive):

The Chopard Blue Diamond Ring

Blue diamonds are the rarest type of diamond found in the world, and this ring carries a 9-carat blue diamond.  With an 18-karat white gold band, any girl would go crazy over this ring.  But, it costs $16.26 million to own it.

1933 Patek Phillipe’s “Supercomplication” Pocket Watch

“Supercomplication” was designed to beat out James Packard in a timepiece complication race.

The 18-karat gold pocket watch was made for Wall Street banker Henry Graves, Jr., required 5 years to design and build.  It features 24 complications, including a chart of the night sky over New York City.  It was sold in 1999 for $11 million to a private owner.

1933 Gold Double Eagle Gold Coin

This coin was never officially issued. They were minted, but none were released into circulation because of the changes made to currency laws in the Great Depression. A coin was sold in 2002 for a total cost of $7,590,000. There are still currently 10 coins that were seized by the U.S. Government. The remaining 10 coins, known as the Langbord coins, remain at Fort Knox.

The 1804 Bust Dollar

This coin’s estimated worth is a whopping $7,500,000. It is considered one of the most famous U.S. coins because of its rarity. This coin series dated from 1795 to 1804. Although silver, the 1804 Bust dollars were not actually struck in 1804, but in 1803 and earlier!

1787 Gold Brasher Doubloon

[caption id="attachment_2368" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="The Doubloon was minted by Ephraim Brasher, a sliversmith, goldsmith, and neighbor of George Washington. This rare coin contains 26.66 grams of gold and was worth about $15 when it was minted. Today, its gold value would be $1,500."][/caption]

In 2011, Blanchard and Company Inc. sold this gold coin for $7.4 million. It is known to be the very first gold coin in the United States that had a denomination in dollars.

Rare Edward III

This coin sold for approximately $6.80 million and is only the third known surviving coin of its kind. It was in circulation from December 1343 until July 1344.

The 1822 Half Eagle

The half eagle coin is a five dollar piece, and only three are known to be in existence. The estimated worth of this coin is $5,000,000. The last time a coin like this was auctioned was in October of 1982 from Bowers & Ruddy, and was sold for $687,500.

The Breguet & Fils Watch

This watch sold in May 2012 by Christie’s for an astounding $4,686,120. It has two movements and is made of 18k gold. This impressive watch was sold to the Breguet museum in 2012.

The 1907 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle

This is considered to be one of the most beautiful coins ever struck, and is estimated to be valued at $3,000,000. This coin is considered ultra high relief because it was struck seven times on a metal press in order to fully bring all the details to attention, which brought the surface of the coin to be nearly pure gold!

The 1839 Ten Dollar Proof

[caption id="attachment_2367" align="alignleft" width="226" caption="The obverse of the coin features the bust of Lady Liberty wearing a coronet and surrounded by 13 stars. The reverse features an American Eagle holding an olive branch in one claw and three arrows in the other."][/caption]

With less than five known samples of this ten-dollar proof, the estimated value of this coin sits at $1,000,000. It was promised that this coin would be kept in circulation despite the changing laws with gold content in coins, and was minted in Philadelphia.

Styles of jewelry come and go. The large chains of the late 90's and early aughts are quite simply no longer the go to jewelry choices of the elite. These days people take a more subtle approach to the gold they wear. They wear smaller tennis style bracelets and chains that do not guarantee neck problems. The bling bling era may not be over but it has slowed it's roll quite a bit. As a result some folks likely have some fairly weighty jewelry on their hands. Jewelry that they would be unlikely to wear out to the club or the street these days.

Luckily New York gold buying is not about the style of the chain you are selling it is simply about the weight. These old blinged out necklaces and braces are probably a better investment than anyone thought. These weighty pieces of jewelry are actually quite impressive even with recent lulls in the gold market. Given that each piece weighs way more than the older jewelry pieces folks tend to find in their attics when you sell this kind of gold in New York these days  you are likely to walk away a happy person with a lot of scratch in your pockets.
